Through this message I want to draw the kind attention of the people who are living in or outside Assam but whose heart possess a soft corner towards Assam and Assamese people that in near future we may not only lose the proud of having the world’s largest river island but we may lose MAJULI forever.

Majuli is a very beautiful and world’s largest river island situated in Assam. It has suitable infrastructure for the promotion of tourism. It also has wide ranging physical, biotic, ethnic and socio-cultural potentiality in this respect. Majuli is rich enough to attract the attention of tourists in cultural front. The colourful life of people, their traditional customs, festivals and dances are some of such important sources of tourist attraction. It is also famous for mask making, pottery, boat making, wood curving, bamboo and craft etc. Besides, various forms of performing art of Satra institutions like “Bhaona”, “Gayan-Bayan”, “Ankia Dramas”, “Satriya Nitya”, music etc. are worth mentioning in this regard.

The big problem of Majuli is the heavy erosion by the mighty Brahmaputra. Originally the total area of this island was 1250 sq. km. After the great earthquake in 1950 the erosion was started. And for this heavy problem the area of this island reduced to 480 sq. km. This means within 57 years it has lost 770 sq km. So it is very obvious that what will happen after fifty years.

The most dangerous problem is the ignorance of administration for the preservation of Majuli. Now administration is relaxing by giving all the responsibility to Brahmaputra Board set up by Government of India in 1980 for the control of floods and bank erosion in the Brahmaputra valley. But we as residents of Majuli feel that they are just wasting and mis-using the fund. We have protested the suspicious, erronomous and un-fruitful measures that the Board has adopted for protecting the erosion. Surprisingly, the Government of Assam is very silent in this regard.

Through this message I want to draw the kind attention of the people who are living in or outside Assam but whose heart possess a soft corner towards Assam and Assamese people that in near future we may not only lose the proud of having the world’s largest river island but we may lose it forever.

I beg the well wishers of Assam to feel the pain which the residents of Majuli are suffering by losing their land and home and kindly to raise their voice for saving our proud MAJULI.
