An opportunity for students to express their expectations of the future world !

Students from schools of North-East (including Sikkim) can be a part of India's preparations for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). The Summit, being held 10 years after the Earth Summit, will address issues significant in shaping environment and development policies in this century the world over. Around 200 countries would be represented at the Summit, many of them by the Heads of State.

Governments across the world are preparing for the WSSD, to be held at Johannesburg from 26 August to 4 September 2002. In India, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) is taking the lead in organizing a variety of national level programmes as part of the preparations for this international event.

In keeping with this spirit, the Ministry is also organizing a National level Competition for school students. The competition will be held in four categories including essay and poetry writing, painting / poster making and photography. The school competitions are being facilitated by National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) and Centre for Environment Education (CEE), on behalf of MoEF. The Competitions will be conducted at two levels. The first level is for students from Std 5 to 8 who can participate in Essay writing, Poetry and Poster Making/Painting, while the second level which is for students from Std 9 to 12 also has the Photography competition besides the above categories.

The schools will conduct the competitions during March and April 2002, on a date suitable to the school. The school winners will then be evaluated at State level by the organizing agencies. There are attractive individual prizes for the winning students and also for the school. The State winners will also be taken for Regional Nature Camps at one of the beautiful national parks/sanctuaries in India.

A poster including the details of the competition, as also explaining the concept of sustainable development, which is the broad theme, has been developed and will be displayed at the schools. Interested schools of the NE region (including Sikkim) can contact CEE North-East over telephone number 516382 or over e-mail ceeghy@sancharnet.in. More information on these competitions is also available on internet at the website www.wssdindia.org/school.htm or over mail from wssdindia@ceeindia.org. Schools also have the option of online registration on the website.
